Best time to move in the PNW (and why it matters)

Best time to move in the PNW (and why it matters)

Everyone thinks summer is the best time to move. It’s not.

Here’s what we’ve learned after moving hundreds of families across Skagit County and Seattle: late spring and early fall are your best windows.

Let me break down why.

Summer (June through August): Peak chaos

Everyone moves in summer. Kids are out of school, weather is nice, it feels like the obvious choice.

But here’s what actually happens:

Movers are booked solid 6 to 8 weeks out. If you wait until the last minute, you’re stuck with whoever has availability (or moving yourself in 90-degree heat).

Truck rentals are harder to find. Everyone’s competing for the same resources.

Closing dates get competitive. Everyone wants to close in June or July, so your realtor is fighting for slots.

It’s hot. Moving heavy furniture in July heat is miserable for everyone involved.

Late spring (April through May): The sweet spot

Weather is mild. No rain, no heat, just good moving weather.

Movers have availability. You get your preferred dates without booking months in advance.

Better service. When we’re not slammed with back-to-back moves, we can give your move the attention it deserves.

School transitions are easier. If you have kids, moving in late spring means they finish the school year, then start fresh in the fall at the new school. No mid-year disruption.

Homes show better. Spring means blooming gardens and longer daylight. Your old home looks great for selling, and your new neighborhood looks inviting.

Early fall (September through October): The hidden gem

This is the window most people miss, and it’s one of the best.

Weather is still solid. September and early October in the PNW are beautiful. Mild temps, low rain, long days.

Movers are available. Summer rush is over, so you’re getting more attention and flexibility with scheduling.

Market is active. Buyers are still looking, but competition has eased up from the spring frenzy.

Kids are settled. If you move in September, kids start the school year in the new place. Clean transition.

Winter (November through March): Depends on your situation

Winter moving isn’t ideal, but sometimes it’s necessary.

The pros: Maximum availability, no competition for closing dates, more flexible scheduling.

The cons: Rain, short days, cold weather. It’s doable, but not fun.

If you have flexibility, wait for spring. If you don’t, we’ve done plenty of winter moves, and we know how to handle them.

What this means for your planning:

If you’re thinking about moving this year, aim for late April through May, or September through early October.

Book movers 3 to 4 weeks out (6 to 8 weeks if you’re moving in summer).

Talk to your realtor about timing your listing and closing to hit these windows.

Start decluttering now, no matter when you’re moving. One room per weekend, and you’ll be ready when the time comes.
